Cotton Silk

By Khushi Madan

Cotton silk is a hybrid fabric that blends the softness and breathability of cotton with the sheen and drape of silk, giving a material that’s soft yet durable. Cotton and silk are among the oldest known textiles in the world. Cotton is harvested from cotton plants and is a primary crop in many warm-climate countries — the USA, China, India, Uzbekistan, Brazil, Pakistan and Turkey are the leading producers. Silk, by contrast, is obtained from the cocoons of mulberry silkworms, which is why it’s a protein fibre. Because both are global favourites for their impeccable qualities, the two were combined into the hybrid we call cotton silk.

History

To understand how cotton silk came about, we go back to the 1800s, when textile manufacturers began experimenting with blending different fabrics into hybrids. They discovered the impeccable qualities of both cotton and silk, decided to blend the two, and the result became a huge hit — chosen for the durability, softness and comfort it provided, and a firm favourite in harsh tropical climates.

The making

This single textile combines the best properties of the two individual fabrics. Only the best, purest forms of cotton and silk are picked by manufacturers and woven together to form the hybrid.

Varieties

Varieties of cotton silk depend mainly on the type of silk, since cotton shares the same properties wherever it’s grown. Silk, however, can be produced through the cultivation of mulberry silkworms or other protein-fibre-producing insects — so the hybrid varies according to the origin of the silk blended with the cotton.

Styling cotton silk

This fabric is usually seen in ethnic clothes, but with the evolution of fashion it has made its way into modern styles too. It’s the darling of festive outfits, making the perfect canvas for both vibrant colours and dull shades since it’s available in opaque and shiny textures. Sarees, suit sets, dupattas and lehengas all incorporate it well for its superior qualities.

How to care for cotton silk

Like any sophisticated fabric, cotton silk should be handled gently so its lustre stays intact. You can machine-wash and line-dry it, but dry cleaning is recommended as the best method for delicate fabrics.
